The 7 best self-hosted automation tools in 2026
Automation you run on your own server or computer: your data stays with you, nothing is billed per task, and nobody can switch it off for you.
Short answer
n8n is the most complete self-hosted replacement for Zapier, under a fair-code licence; Activepieces is the closest MIT-licensed equivalent. Node-RED suits event-driven and device work, Windmill and Kestra suit developer teams running scripts and data pipelines, Huginn suits watching the web and acting on changes, and OpenClerq suits one person's AI-assisted clerical work on a desktop.
We build OpenClerq, which appears on this page. We have tried to describe every tool fairly and to say where another one is the better choice. Facts checked 19 September 2026; if something is wrong, open an issue.
The list at a glance
| Tool | Best for | Licence | How you build |
|---|---|---|---|
| n8n | App integrations and AI workflows | Sustainable Use License (fair-code) | Visual editor, plus code |
| Activepieces | Zapier-style flows under MIT | MIT (Community Edition) | Visual builder |
| Node-RED | Event-driven flows, devices, APIs | Apache 2.0 | Visual flow editor |
| Windmill | Turning scripts into workflows and internal apps | AGPLv3 core; proprietary parts in some images | Code first, with a flow editor |
| Kestra | Data and process orchestration | Apache 2.0 | YAML, with a UI |
| Huginn | Watching the web and acting on changes | MIT | Agents configured in a web UI |
| OpenClerq | AI-assisted clerical work on one desktop | MIT | Instructions, formulas and triggers |
How we chose: you can run it on infrastructure you control, the core is free, and it was actively maintained when we checked. Licences matter here more than in most categories — they decide whether you can offer the tool to clients or build it into a product.
The tools, one by one
01n8n
- Licence
- Sustainable Use License — free to self-host for internal business use; resale restricted
- Runs as
- Node.js server; Docker
The most complete self-hosted automation platform: hundreds of integrations, a visual editor with code steps where you need them, and AI agent, chain and vector store nodes. The default choice if your job is connecting SaaS apps.
Watch out: the licence is source-available, not OSI open source. Read it before offering n8n to clients as part of a paid service.
02Activepieces
- Licence
- MIT for the Community Edition; enterprise features are commercial
- Runs as
- TypeScript server; Docker
A friendly, Zapier-like builder with a growing library of integrations, AI agents and support for MCP servers. The community edition runs unlimited flows and users.
Watch out: fewer integrations than n8n; check that the ones you need exist.
03Node-RED
- Licence
- Apache 2.0, under the OpenJS Foundation
- Runs as
- Node.js — from a Raspberry Pi to a server
Flow-based programming in the browser: wire nodes together to react to events, call APIs and move messages. Mature, light, with thousands of community nodes, and at home in industrial and IoT settings.
Watch out: more technical than n8n or Activepieces for business-app workflows.
04Windmill
- Licence
- AGPLv3 core; the community Docker images also include proprietary code under separate terms
- Runs as
- Server; Docker or Kubernetes
For teams who write scripts: Python, TypeScript, Go, Bash, SQL and more become scheduled jobs, webhooks, multi-step flows and small internal apps, with permissions and audit logs.
Watch out: developer-oriented, and the licensing takes a careful read.
05Kestra
- Licence
- Apache 2.0; enterprise edition is commercial
- Runs as
- Java server; Docker or Kubernetes
An orchestration platform where workflows are declared in YAML and triggered by schedules or events. Strong for data pipelines and long-running business processes that need retries and visibility.
Watch out: more infrastructure than a small office needs.
06Huginn
- Licence
- MIT
- Runs as
- Ruby on Rails server; Docker
"Agents that monitor and act on your behalf": watch websites, feeds and APIs, and send alerts or trigger actions when something changes. A long-standing, hackable project.
Watch out: an older interface and no built-in AI steps.
07OpenClerq
- Licence
- MIT
- Runs as
- Desktop app for macOS and Windows, with a local gateway
Our product, and a different shape from the rest: not an integration platform but a desktop agent for clerical work. Cron, file-watch and webhook triggers run instructions through a deterministic calculation engine and the model of your choice, and every run is recorded with its cost. No server to host.
Watch out: no integration library and no visual editor; in release 0.5 the model does not yet call tools on its own.
What self-hosting really costs
- Updates and security. You patch it, and you are responsible when an exposed instance is found by someone else first.
- Backups. Workflows, credentials and history live in your database now.
- Uptime. If the server is down at 07:30, the 07:30 job does not run.
- Secrets. The tool holds API keys for everything it connects to; protect it accordingly.
- Licences. Internal use is almost always fine. Reselling, hosting for clients or embedding in a product is where fair-code, AGPL and permissive licences differ.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free alternative to Zapier?
Self-hosted n8n is free for internal business use and has the widest range of integrations. If you need a permissive open-source licence, Activepieces' Community Edition is MIT-licensed.
Is n8n free to self-host?
Yes, for internal business use under its Sustainable Use License. Some enterprise features are paid, and offering n8n to others as a service is restricted.
Which self-hosted automation tools are truly open source?
Activepieces Community Edition, Huginn and OpenClerq are MIT; Node-RED and Kestra are Apache 2.0; Windmill's core is AGPLv3. n8n is source-available under a fair-code licence.
Do I need a server?
For most of these, yes — usually a small machine running Docker. Node-RED runs happily on a Raspberry Pi. OpenClerq is the exception: it runs as a desktop app on your own Mac or PC.
